Phillip Island Penguin Parade
On Phillip Island, watch little penguins emerge from the sea at dusk and make their way across the beach towards their burrows. Viewing platforms and boardwalks offer a way to observe this wildlife in its natural habitat.
What it is
Phillip Island, about 90 minutes’ drive from Melbourne before the additional drive across the island, is known for the Penguin Parade at Summerlands. Each evening, little penguins return from the ocean around sunset and walk across the beach towards their burrows. The parade is part of a protected wildlife experience managed by Phillip Island Nature Parks.
What to expect
Visitors watch from designated viewing areas, then can explore the boardwalks and look for penguins in the colony. The exact arrival time changes with the season, so check the official arrival calendar when planning. The experience takes place outdoors, whatever the weather.
The Penguin Parade Visitor Centre has interpretive displays, a café and retail facilities. Booking tickets in advance is recommended, as sessions can fill up. Everyone attending, including infants, needs a ticket.
Getting there
The Penguin Parade is at 1019 Ventnor Road, Summerlands. Driving is the most straightforward option for many visitors. Public transport to Phillip Island is limited: the V/Line bus from Melbourne goes to Cowes, not the Penguin Parade, and there is no return bus to Melbourne after the evening parade. Check current transport options and tour arrangements before setting out.
Respecting the penguins
The parade is a chance to observe wild animals, so please follow staff instructions and stay in designated areas. Photography and filming are not allowed after sunset. Keep voices low and avoid disturbing penguins as they move between the beach and their burrows.
Tips for your visit
- Bring layers and protection from wind or rain; the viewing areas are outdoors, and evenings can feel cool.
- Check the penguin arrival calendar and your ticket session before leaving. Plan extra travel time during school holidays and long weekends.
- If relying on public transport, plan your return in advance; the V/Line service does not return to Melbourne after the parade.
- Consider visiting nearby island attractions during the day, but leave enough time to reach the parade for your booked session.
