Little Penguins at St Kilda Pier
At dusk, little penguins return to the rocks around St Kilda Pier and Breakwater. Visitors can observe them from a dedicated viewing platform during booked evening sessions, with Point Ormond Reserve nearby for a bay-side sunset stop.

A penguin colony beside the city
St Kilda Pier and Breakwater is home to a colony of little penguins. The birds spend the day feeding in the bay and return to the rocks around the breakwater around sunset. A purpose-built viewing platform at the end of the pier offers a way to watch them while helping protect their habitat.
The viewing experience is operated by Phillip Island Nature Parks. Sessions are free, but advance booking is required and places are limited. Check the operator’s official page for session details and ticket availability before planning your visit.
What to expect
The penguins are wild animals, so sightings and the length of time they remain visible can vary. The viewing experience is guided, and visitors watch from the designated platform rather than walking along the penguin habitat. Keep noise and light to a minimum, follow staff instructions and do not approach or touch the birds.
St Kilda’s foreshore is also a pleasant place for a walk, with views over Port Phillip Bay. Point Ormond Reserve in nearby Elwood has a lookout and coastal paths, making it a possible extra stop for bay views around sunset. Plan the timing around your booked penguin session; the penguins generally come ashore as daylight fades, so the two activities may not fit neatly into the same sunset window.
Tips for your visit
- Reserve a viewing place before travelling; check the official operator page for current session times and booking information.
- Allow time to reach the pier and find the designated viewing area before your session begins.
- Bring a warm layer for the waterfront after dark, and follow all instructions about lighting, noise and wildlife distance.
- Point Ormond Reserve is a separate nearby stop. If you want to see sunset there, check sunset time and allow for the journey back to St Kilda; do not assume it can be combined with a penguin session without a timing gap.
