The Caves, Inverloch
The Caves is a rugged stretch of coast near Inverloch, known for its rock formations, intertidal platform and sea caves. At low tide, rock pools and fossil-bearing landscapes become easier to explore.

A rugged coastal landscape
The Caves is a beach and rocky foreshore on the Cape Paterson–Inverloch coast in Victoria’s Yallock-Bulluk Marine and Coastal Park. Its layered rock formations, sea caves and broad intertidal platform make it a striking place to see the changing coastal landscape. The area is also recognised for its geology and fossils.
At low tide, the rock platform is exposed, revealing pools and unusual formations. Parks Victoria recommends exploring rock platforms around low tide, when more of the intertidal area is accessible. The cave opening is part of the rocky coastline, but access conditions can change with the tide and sea conditions.
What to see
Look across the rock layers and shoreline for the area’s varied geological features. The wider coast is known for fossil discoveries, and dinosaur footprints may be visible on rock platforms; they can be difficult to spot. The Caves is also a place to observe rock pools and the meeting of the rocky shore with Bass Strait.
A walking track leads down from the road to the beach. The route descends a bluff, so allow for uneven coastal terrain and take care on the rocks. The beach is not patrolled, and the coast has hazards including rips.
Safety note: Coastal cliffs and rock formations can be unstable. Follow all signs and barriers, keep away from cliff edges and any restricted cave areas, and do not enter a closed or signed-off section.
Tips for your visit
- Check the local tide forecast before setting out; low tide is generally the best time to see the rock platform and pools.
- Wear sturdy, grippy footwear for the track and uneven rock surfaces. Avoid climbing wet or slippery rocks.
- Allow time to descend to the beach and return up the bluff, and keep children close near the water and cliff areas.
- Conditions can change quickly along the coast. Follow on-site signs and keep clear of any closed or restricted areas.
